Interlude: God’s Apples

Last night I logged into EVE to check things out. After E3 and the ensuing illness that comes on the heels of every convention-type setting, I was eager to get back into the game. However, I wasn’t so eager to jump right back into combat. The longer I play this game, the longer it seems to take me to get into a ‘fighting mood’. When I’m not in the mood for PVP but try to get some in anyways, things tend to go poorly for me.

Luckily, exploration is now a thing that is pretty fun and easy to do. I hopped into my Cheetah in Hevrice and undocked to find four unknown signatures in the system. After a few minutes of probing, these resolved into two data sites, a relic, and a wormhole. I warped off to the first data site and started to do my thing, joined by Akairra from Stay Frosty. However, almost as soon as we entered the site, we spotted more Core Probes on d-scan. Undaunted, I continued hacking things while Akairra kept an eye on close range d-scan, lest anyone try to drop in.

About halfway through the first site, a Merlin appeared on short range d-scan. Akairra stayed in the site while I swapped my Cheetah out for a more menacing Algos, the better to shoot things with. However, the Merlin never actually entered the site, so we loitered around a bit longer. New things popped up on d-scan – a Talos and a Gnosis. I wasn’t confident that my little Algos could take down two battlecruisers, likely piloted by Tuskers intent on Frosty blood. I bounced around the sites, mainly to see if the Gnosis was in fact a Tusker or a hapless newb doing actual exploration with the ship.

It was a short time later, at the relic site, that an Inner Zone Imicus showed up on d-scan. Intrigued, I stayed at the relic site and spent some time d-scanning around, trying to see where it was hiding. It wasn’t, however. Instead, it plopped itself on grid with me, at zero in the relic site, just 2000m away. Instinct kicked in as I targeted, scrammed and deployed drones. The Imicus was fast and I had to overheat my MWD to stay in range of it, but in a fight between an exploration fit Imicus and a combat fit Algos, there really isn’t much of a contest: the IZ Imicus died.

Slower than it should have, it dawned on me that the Imicus was piloted by a Tusker of ill repute, God’s Apples. Given that there were three other Tuskers in local, most likely flying battlecruisers, I didn’t bother scooping loot. Instead, I aligned out to a safe and ran like a little girl. A good thing, too, as d-scan revealed the arrival of the Talos and Gnosis in the relic site within seconds of my escape. Polite as I always am, I offered a ‘gf’ in local. This is what followed:

[ 2013.06.28 05:26:00 ] Marc Scaurus > God’s Apples gf
[ 2013.06.28 05:26:07 ] God’s Apples > Over load MWD
[ 2013.06.28 05:26:11 ] God’s Apples > And press orbit 500
[ 2013.06.28 05:26:15 ] God’s Apples > Skillz yo
[ 2013.06.28 05:26:38 ] Marc Scaurus > nomadplz

Once upon a time, Tuskers was an oddity in the EVE universe in that it was a pirate corp with a code. Part of that code was the caveat that no Tusker should smack talk in local, which in practice meant no talking aside from a ‘gf’ or ‘o/’, that sort of thing. While the code remains de jure, it no longer really applies apparently. Sad times.

At any rate, I docked shortly after and had to call it a night. I am not satisfied though, and will soon undock once more – this time live on Twitch.tv. To follow my exploits live, follow me on Twitter and watch for when I announce I’m online. In the meantime, fly smart.
